My HS freshman had an assignment to bring in five items that represent their personality / values / etc. (My five: Remain in Light LP, torn converse, coffee scoop, picture of my brothers circa 1990, my moleskine notebook).
Of the ones who brought specific music artifacts (many shared iPods with a blanket ‘I love music” and a “I don’t know” when pressed to be more specific), they went in this order from most popular to least:
2-3 mentions each
- Rascal Flats (who are very popular in the suburban high school where I teach)
- Iron Maiden (and this one elicited the most “me too”s, including a girl taking off her sweatshirt to reveal an Iron Maiden t-shirt)

- The Beatles
I was kind of surprised - should I have been?
